Kingdom of Light
I came back because music has always been part of who I am.
My relationship with music began when I was eight years old, sitting in front of a piano.
I loved music, but after a few years I realized that one instrument wasn't enough for me. I wanted more. I wanted every sound.
Learning dozens of instruments wasn't exactly an option, so I found another way. I started listening differently. Studying records. Understanding how songs were built. And eventually, I found myself behind a pair of turntables.
At fourteen, while working at a small radio station in Palermo, I used to mix live on air — but I didn't speak into the microphone and, whenever possible, I preferred to stay in the background.
I was incredibly shy.
Then came the night that changed everything.
Two DJs who had heard me mixing convinced me to come and watch them play at a club. I had absolutely no intention of performing. At some point they told me they were going to get a drink and asked me to stay behind the decks.
The record was running out.
They weren't coming back.
And I remember thinking: if this record ends, everyone is going to look at me. That's going to be even worse.
So I grabbed another record and mixed it in.
No preparation. No plan.
It worked.
The crowd reacted, the two DJs came back smiling and said something like: “See? It's not so bad, is it?”
My response was considerably less poetic.
But something had changed.
For the first time, I understood that perhaps this could really be part of my life.
Music gradually became much more than a teenage obsession.
At twenty-two, an opportunity took me from Palermo to Rome, where I began working professionally in audio and post-production for a group connected with major Italian radio networks, including RTL 102.5 and RDS.
It was also a personal victory.
Growing up, not everyone around me considered being a DJ or working with music a real profession. For some, it was little more than a game.
Rome gave me my answer.
Over the years came clubs, events, radio, records and countless nights behind the decks — so many that today I couldn't possibly remember them all.
And then, eventually, I walked away.
Not completely from music. I don't think I ever could.
I continued making music privately and playing it for friends, who repeatedly encouraged me to release something. I never did. Perhaps because of insecurity. Perhaps because the music industry had changed. Perhaps because a part of me still wanted to keep music hidden, just as that fourteen-year-old boy in Palermo had wanted to hide behind the studio glass.
Even years later in Budapest, whenever someone convinced me to play again, that old feeling returned.
The adrenaline. The joy. The electricity.
Music had never left.
It had simply been sleeping.
The name Vinny came long before the artist.
I was almost nine when my family moved to New York for the first time. I spent different periods of my life there, particularly on Long Island, and somewhere along the way “Vinny” became my name.
The O. belongs to another part of the story.
That's enough for now.
I grew up during an era that shaped electronic music as we know it.
The electronic sounds of the '80s and '90s remain deeply embedded in me. Rexanthony was an important influence during my youth. Underworld are still playing in my head — and yes, I still sing along. The Prodigy remain legendary to me. Sash! and countless others belong to the soundtrack of those years.
Today that DNA naturally leads me toward EDM and, especially, Trance.
But Vinny O. isn't intended to live inside one genre.
Sometimes, when nobody is looking — apparently I still haven't completely lost that fourteen-year-old's habit of hiding — I make Chill-Out and Café del Mar-inspired music too.
Because I've never really cared about musical borders.
What matters to me is what music creates inside us.
If I had to describe mine, I wouldn't start with BPM or genre.
I'd call it energy for the heart and the mind.
Kingdom of Light is my first official release as Vinny O., and the first chapter I chose to reveal from a much larger musical project.
The song reflects something very personal.
Over the last few years, my life has passed through very different places: happiness, depression, the desire to fight back, and finally the rediscovery of the will to live.
In exactly that order.
I learned that sometimes the desire to live isn't something we can simply take for granted. Sometimes it has to be fought for, earned and protected.
That's where the light in Kingdom of Light comes from.
The record also became something greater because of the people who helped me bring it to life.
I wanted Killian Cruiser involved almost obsessively. It took me about a month just to manage to reach him — to the point where I occasionally suspect he finally answered simply to make me stop trying.
Fortunately, he hadn't actually seen my messages.
What followed was an immediate creative understanding. Choosing him proved to be one of the best decisions I could have made. He didn't simply work on the production; he listened, challenged ideas and continually helped me understand how the sound could become better.
Choosing Eileen Jaime was equally deliberate.
I had heard something in her voice before we ever worked together and knew it belonged in this song. What I discovered was not only an extraordinary vocalist, but an exceptional professional. Being able to explain not merely how I wanted something sung, but why the song existed, and then listening to her ideas in return, helped transform the record into what I had imagined.
I couldn't be happier with those choices.
Music is only one way I create.
I'm an Italian multidisciplinary artist based in Budapest, working across photography, filmmaking, drone cinematography and music.
Palermo is where I come from. It shaped me as a man and as an artist, and that will never disappear.
Budapest is the city I chose. I love Hungary, and Budapest has become an essential part of my life and of the person I am today.
Perhaps that's why I don't see photography, film and music as completely different things. They're simply different languages for doing the same thing:
turning something I feel into something another person can experience.
I don't have a master plan for Vinny O.
I'm not starting this project by saying I need a certain number of streams, a chart position, a festival stage or fame.
Of course, I'll welcome whatever comes.
But Kingdom of Light doesn't need to become a hit for this story to have a happy ending.
Because today I have a wife who loves me and supports even my craziest artistic ideas. I have a very young son and daughter. And one day I'd like them to have a small piece of evidence of what their father decided he could still do.
He made a record.
He released it.
Maybe thousands of people listened to it.
Maybe only a few did.
That's not the important part.
I want them to grow up knowing that dreams don't come with an expiration date. That age doesn't decide when you're allowed to create, begin again or try something you've been afraid to do for years.
And perhaps that's ultimately what Kingdom of Light means to me.
After all those years of keeping this part of myself hidden, I can finally say:
I did it.
